Devil O' the Highlands

In 2011 Rene (see "Bleudesign" under "Running Gear" on the left) ran the Devil O' the Highlands in Scotland. A 69 km long ultra race through the Highlands of Scotland. Did I mention this was his first ultra running race - ever......!? Crazy? Yes! Did he make it to the finish? Yes! Did the Ultra Devil take possession of him after this race? Yes, he's even got bigger plans for the future!

DEVIL 'O THE HIGHLANDS 2011

Al m'n hele actieve sportcarriere gaat van uitdaging naar uitdaging. Bij 'the Devil' is het eigenlijk niet anders... Tijdens de beklimming van de Mont Ventoux, ter ere van hét 40ste verjaardagfeestje, rijdt ik in het bos een paar kilometer op met m'n vriendje Japie Renes. Hij rennend en ik op de racefiets. Het is dáár waar de kiem wordt gelegd! Zoals hij erbij loopt; zo gracieus, zo elegant, zo snel, zwevend gewoonweg, zo'n mooie jongen... Dát wil ik ook!

It's not always about the runner

We Ultrarunners have the habit of writing and talking a lot about ourselves. But often it's not about the runner. It's about a C.O.A.C.H. planning every detail, making sure you are on schedule, making sure you eat and drink enough. And it's about a support crew. Family and friends that sacrifice their own time to cheer you on and help you get to the finish asap.

One of those friends made this move of the Self Transcendence run in Amsterdam last June (100km). Excellent choice of music by the way Outdoor Henkie!

 

Winter running

Snow, hail, wind, ice and a combination of all these. That's running in winter. Some say you might get an injury. Some claim that these runs reduce your average running speed (which you will regret later in the year). Some say it's dangerous. Some say it doesn't make sense for Spartathlon training.

Looking back and making plans

Some people might notice the gap between this post and the one before it. Yes, I confess I have been running more than I was blogging. Apparently, people actually read this blog because I did get some comments on not writing.

So I have returned to the Blog-front.

2011 has been a great ultrarunning year! In June I ran a good 100 km race in Amsterdam when temperatures were well above being pleasant (>28 Celcius) and in September my first 24h race in Scotland turned out to be a winning race (which is completely new to me).
